Loft Tour: Mid-century Modern Meets Victorian Glamour

Charoonkit Thahong’s New York loft mixes Hollywood regency with mid-century modern overtones to create a space that celebrates good design. Some gems include the 1969 VP Globe lamp by Verner Panton, the Fortuny Moda lamp, the Knoll Tulip armless chairs and the oh-so-fun black Victorian love-seat. Thahong, an art director for R/GA, has managed to infuse warmth into the otherwise over-sized, industrial space (located in Hell’s Kitchen) adding subtle touches of glamour to finish off the look. It’s proof that life without walls doesn’t mean sticking to only one aesthetic; Thahong’s space is fit for both Charles Eames and Marie Antoinette!

Great shot especially the first one and the window with the view!!!

  2. Danka says:

I find that it’s just a hodgepodge of classic design pieces that don’t work together (what an insult). It’s quite prententious. I found nothing interesting or appealing.

  3. Booyawee says:

I’ll be this guy is still single. Midcentury furniture are so uncomfortable for a family living. Every move every turn has to fit the decor. Such a hard era.

  4. Thomas Muller says:

Too bad that people on this BLOG are full of jealousy and negativeness. Everyone should have freedom to live the way he or she wants. Stop being so jealous, it not healthy for your mind.
I think this loft is just beautiful. Thomas.

  5. Southsidemodern says:

He has amazing taste and this space is a perfect example.

  6. Jackie Noam says:

Thomas: If you put your pictures out there then you should be open for criticism and comments.

It’s great if you like your room to look like it’s a staged sales floor for something like Design Within Reach or Bo Concepts (LOL). Looks like things were moved around for the shoot to make it come off more “designed”. Wow they seem to be better at PR and staging than design, LOL. The first two imges have swapped out lighting.

  7. Nurse Jackie says:

I won’t comment on his taste which I think it’s such a subjective matter but the writing in the editorial said “Thahong’s space is fit for both Charles Eames and Marie Antoinette!” …well dear.. guess what..they both are DEAD!

  8. Southsidemodern says:

Jackie. I have been in the space countless times. You can trust me when I say the place is not staged. The first shot was taken recently since he switched out the chandelier. If the space looks like Bo Concept to you the you clearly have no taste and zero knowledge of design.

  9. Southern Discomfort says:

Southsidemodern. You make me really really want to see his place. I’ll bet it’s amazing but is it true that he charges money when he’s inviting people to his party? (from the post above) In that case I’m probably too poor to see his good taste.

  10. KJ says:

This one of the most amazing lofts I have ever been in and one I frequently visit. It houses an exquisite collection of both vintage and modern pieces…no Bo Concept here!!!

And yes, he switches out furniture, lighting fixtures and changes the layout every once in a while but it is his space…he never asked any of you to move in!

He is a far cry from cheap. I have been invited to countless amazing dinner parties and have never been asked to pay!

  11. Susan says:

Some of you who were there shouldn’t even be there to begin with.
Luckily, his heart is bigger than your mouths ( Southern Discomfort & Eliza ),
He loves company, friends and people, many time invited more than he should + some people always brought in strangers to prove that they too had friends. So, it always ended up over crowed & not enough food which made him ordered food to entertain, big deal. Too many losers brought friends to party to eat free food so they wouldn’t have to go to McDonald’s

I have been there twice, the man has great taste. He loves furniture and sure picks good ones. Kitchen is superb. Low key but high quality. Bathroom is the only space i am not crazy about.

  12. Rick G. says:

It’s weird that people start trashing him personally. I guess this guy has some enemies out there. Truth is, I could care less nor it’s relevant here.

However, I do agree with the fact that this place no more than just random design pieces putting together, like a DWR showroom. I just don’t understand what’s so great about buying a bunch expensive pieces and sticking them together without coordination!?

Look at the 3rd picture, is that a showroom or what? What does one piece has to do with another? And I seriously don’t get the idea that that’s his intention. The space itself appears to be quite exceptional from the pictures, but not the furniture and arrangement IMHO. 2 words: Nouveau riche.

To loftlife: you could do better! I’m quite disappointed at your choice.

  13. wtf?? says:

wow, what a bunch of a-holes. pretty sad really.

I know of most people’s personal taste and I’m willing to bet most of you shouldn’t be ones to talk.

  14. Sitang says:

    Hey, Mr. Southern discomfort,

It is not really appropriate to go to a friend of a friend party anyway. The host charged only $10 but the food and beverages which he served cost much more. He invited so many people how you expect him to feed everyone for free and he does not even know you. If you don’t wanna pay, you shouldn’t attend. Not like pay and then complain later. Who is cheap here? I hope I don’t have to see you at his party again!

  15. tcm says:

Booyawee: Mid-century modern is not uncomfortable. Enjoy your overstuffed chain-store (oops, I mean contemporary) couch in your McTownhouse. The loft looks great and I’m sorry everyone’s so upset that he isn’t a packrat like everyone else.

  16. [...] then there’s this little view. *sigh*. Yes please. I miss that [...]
